A dark comedy depicting the misadventures of a layabout who lands in the employ of an immigration detention centre, Below is both a conduit for cathartic politicised humour and a commentary on Australia's regressive asylum policies. At the same time, that the film's absurd premise finds levity in brutality with real-world resonance raises questions about audience, intention and responsibility, writes Mel Campbell.
