Who are we?
Australian Teachers of Media Inc. (ATOM) is an independent, not-for-profit, professional association that has been promoting the study of media and screen literacy for over fifty years. Our goal is to empower students, teachers, parents, and screen media enthusiasts to dig deeper, to analyse and to better understand all the screen products we enjoy.
What do we do?
ATOM publishes two critically acclaimed magazines, Metro and Screen Education. Screen Education focuses on educational articles that support primary and secondary teachers who use screen-based materials in classrooms. Metro covers screen production from Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, and publishes longer articles more suited to screen industry professionals, film enthusiasts, and senior secondary and tertiary film and media educators and students.
We support teachers in creating better, more engaging lesson plans for the younger generation. ATOM has now produced over 1000 study guides covering all subject areas across all primary and secondary school year levels.
The ATOM Awards have been a staple in the Australian screen industries since 1982. The Awards are open to content creators across Australia and New Zealand, with categories covering primary, secondary and tertiary students as well as general/open. Thirty-plus categories cover everything from feature-length films and television, to animation, educational resources and new media including web series, apps, ebooks and games.
ATOM also runs four creative media competitions: the ATOM Photo Comp, the 1-Minute Film Competition, and Front Page (a student newspaper competition).
Why should you donate?
Donations to the ATOM Gift Fund will allow ATOM to continue to:
- Promote curriculum-linked competitions that support teachers and students to build practical skills and develop knowledge and understanding about the themes involved.
- Recognise and reward excellence in screen media content creation at all ages. Students learn how to work cooperatively and build a sense of pride and integrity in the work they create and enter into ATOM’s awards and competitions.
- Run professional development events for Australian teachers, increasing their expertise, leading to improved outcomes for students. We also offer exam revision seminars for students annually.
- Devise and create resources that support teachers in shaping young minds to explore issues and themes in screen media. Although we have been publishing educational materials for more than half a century, meeting the costs of researching, writing, editing, designing, printing and shipping is an ongoing challenge.
ATOM has deductible gift recipient (DGR) endorsement from the Australian Taxation Office, which means any donations of A$2 or more are fully tax deductible.
ATOM is also registered as a charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC).
