There Is No ‘I’ In Island is an animated documentary series created by Tasmanian filmmakers Rebecca Thomson and Catherine Pettman during the COVID-19 lockdown in May 2020. When Tasmania’s borders closed, and the island became isolated from the mainland, the filmmakers invited people from across the state to record their voices, sharing their fears, dreams and reflections. Over sixty recordings were collected from Tasmanians aged five to ninety-five, including voices of children, healthcare workers, migrants and people living with disability.
Each of the five episodes explores a different emotional theme. Together, these stories form a portrait of Tasmania during a time of uncertainty, resilience and imagination. The series demonstrates how art, storytelling and community voices can help people understand fear, empathy and hope in a world that suddenly felt both very small and very connected at the same time.
