Hillary and Jackie is a story about the internationally renowneed British cellist Jacqualine Du Pre. Armstrong's article provides a background to Anand Tucker's film and traces the adaptation of a real person's history onto film. Subsequently, he discusses Hillary and Jackie as a film revolving around strong female characters, 'exploring issues around family, career, illness and loss while addressing the woman spectator.' This is followed by close analyses of central characters performed by Rachel Griffiths and Emily Watson, and a brief, effective discussion of how the woman's film is proposed to the woman in the audience as a model of blissful transgression.
