Fiction films are conventionally seen as fanciful flights from the hard truths and banal miscellanea of real life. But – as documentary maker Steve Thomas expounds, with reference to his own experiences behind the camera – the realist oeuvre of writer/director Sue Brooks is characterised by a desire to capture the seemingly quotidian, in an attempt to explore the heavier implications underpinning the everyday.
