Aboriginal Warrior tells the story of Chris Collard. Before Chris became a world champion kickboxer, he grew up in a home without love. As a teenager he thought the world hated him, so he hated it back.
Chris spent his teenage years in and out of juvenile detention. He spent his eighteenth birthday behind bars. It was then that Chris realised he had to decide what road he would take in his own life. He had to decide what kind of a man he would become. Would he be a strong and proud man with a purpose in life? Or would he become a dysfunctional man stuck in the cycle of crime and incarceration?
Chris decided to turn his life around. He realised his life had just been repeating the same cycles that he grew up with: violence, drugs, detention, prison. So he moved away from his home in Fremantle to focus his emotions and energy into kickboxing.
Aboriginal Warrior is a powerful documentary about one man’s victory over enormous challenges and disadvantages: addiction, abuse, systemic racism and incarceration. Aboriginal Warrior not only addresses the seriousness of these social problems; it also provides a powerful example of the skills and attitudes that young people can develop to overcome these problems and create the foundations for a better and more empowered life.
