In all its forms and colours, ochre is essential to the life of Aboriginal communities. This four-part contemporary dance work – yellow, black, red and white – is a portrayal for each colour of this earthy substance, its myriad of purposes and the spiritual significance to Aboriginal people. Ochres, a dance theatre performance by Bangarra Dance Theatre, was recorded at the sunken garden amphitheatre of the University of Western Australia during the 1996 Festival of Perth. With sell-out shows around Australia and invitations to perform internationally, this iconic, watershed work revealed Bangarra Dance Theatre to the world.
