This article aimed at primary teachers discusses the need to extend the language of visual grammar as found currently in theory, so that it would be of practical use in the classroom. The need for a language to 'talk out' images is being generated by teachers and teacher trainee students working with visual literacy in an already crowded curriculum. Case study material shows teachers working with picture books and factual texts to encourage children's close examination of visual images.
