Ava DuVernay's realisation of Madeleine L'Engle's supposedly unfilmable 1962 young adult novel is a thoroughly twenty-first century work, featuring an ethnically diverse cast and supplementing the original text's Christian motifs with a contemporary message of self-acceptance. Yet, as Ella Donald finds, the film ultimately retains the book's exaltation of individuality.
