From Demountables to Foundations: Media Studies, Media Convergence and the Curriculum

John Hartley once described the field of Media Studies as a hybrid creature, born under unfortuitous circumstances 'in wooden demountables on the wrong side of campus, or on the wrong side of town across the binary divide of the tertiary sector'. This article suggests that Media Studies has come to possess a cohesive and recognisable structure, and that it is appropriate to speak of foundational knowledges in an area such as Media Studies.
