The intention of this paper, presented at the 2004 ATOM Conference is to revisit Paul Schrader's 'Notes on Film Noir', the seminal piece of noir criticism. Boris Trbic examines the relevance of this text and draws attention to a plethora of interpretive possibilities stemming from Schrader's discussion of the crucial conditions, stylistic elements, themes and phases in film noir.
