Vengeance taints every scene, every storyline, in the cinema of Korean auteur Park Chan-wook – an unsurprising fact, given his homeland's long history of being invaded and ill-treated, resentment becoming enshrined in the cultural consciousness. Yet his films are also stylistically accomplished, replete with vivid visuals and deliberately deceptive plotlines that not only transcend discrete genre labels, but also offer viewers tantalising, challenging material, writes Anthony Carew.
