The Netflix release of comedian Hannah Gadsby's stand-up show Nanette, released globally in 2018 to widespread acclaim, taps into the time-honoured use of humour to broach heavy topics – in this case, issues relating to queerness and shame. Unlike its live counterpart, however, the streamable version facilitates a turning-away from the original performance's urgent, confrontational material, writes Fury.
