Taking liberties as both an adaptation and an account of historical events, Justin Kurzel's reimagining of the Ned Kelly tale highlights the imbalances in authorship, perspective and power that come into play when recording and recounting the past. Ultimately, the film – like its rebellious protagonist – suggests that, in the face of suppression, forging one's own path is a viable course of action, writes Alexandra Heller-Nicholas.
