A Beijing-set film with a largely Chinese cast and crew, but helmed by an Australian writer/director, King of Peking is, in many ways, a unique piece of cinema. Demonstrating the potential for intercultural exchange and hybridity in the artistic space, it eschews the longstanding Othering and marginalisation of East Asian stories and creatives that have plagued the mainstream screen, writes Leah Jing.
