A stark contrast from the period films and genre hits that dominated the Australian film revival, two small-scale dramas released at the beginning of the 1980s told stories from a much more recognisable milieu: the work, personal crises and love lives of middle-class city dwellers. The films, directed by John Duigan and Paul Cox respectively, were only moderately successful in their day, but, as Suzie Gibson and Dean Biron argue, are ripe for rediscovery as quintessential reflections of their era.
