This version uses the same blueprint as the 1978 film, albeit realised in the world of mobile phones and social media. But more significant than the contemporised technology is the way the film repudiates the male gaze: no longer mere objects of exploitation, Patrick's female characters are elaborate, expressive and empowered, writes Tara Judah.
