Katsuya Tomita's third feature depicts the intercultural dynamic between Thailand and Japan, along with the impacts of capitalism, poverty and exploitation in the former. Like its male protagonist, writes David Crewe, Bangkok Nites goes beyond the postcard-perfect images of its setting and uncovers the not-always-attractive aspects lurking underneath.
