The bush has always been central to the mythology of Australia. In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the bush was romanticized or sentimentalized in the poetry of 'Banjo' Patterson and C.J. Dennis respectively. A rural arcadia of plenty co-existed with a life of hard work and taming the elements in the bush.
