The Adventures of Maya the Bee is a German book written by Waldemar Bonsels and first published in 1912. The book has been published in many languages and also appears as a comic book series, an animated television series and now a feature film. The original Maya the Bee television series was first produced in the 1970s and was an imaginative blend of fun-filled and thrilling adventures that gained Maya loyal fans from all corners of the globe.

The original stories revolve around a little bee named Maya and her friends Willy the bee, Flip the grasshopper, Mrs Cassandra (Maya's teacher) and many other insects and creatures. The book depicts Maya's development from an adventurous youngster to a responsible adult member of bee society.

The longevity of Maya the Bee and its popularity with children and adults is due to its enchanting story, rich and interesting characters, and the messages that emphasise the importance of being yourself and helping and sharing with others. The 1922 book is remarkable for introducing an independent, feisty and adventurous female character in a children's book. However, the character of Maya and the themes of the original story have considerably changed in later iterations. In the original book, Maya represents the ideal citizen, and the beehive represents a well-organised militarist society. Later representations of Maya and the story have focused on Maya's individuality and values such as the importance of friendship, harmony between different groups and helping others.

Today a new generation of fans enjoy the tales of Maya the Bee, with the CGI television series already seen in many European countries as well as on ABC TV in Australia.

The film will appeal to children aged four and up, and the film and study guide can be used in all levels of the primary school. The film is both a wonderful, enriching viewing experience for children and a very good way of introducing and discussing the world of bees.
