Following their adventures in Ice Age and Ice Age 2: The Meltdown, life has changed for Manny, Sid and Diego. Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs sees Scrat still chasing the elusive acorn and maybe finding true love; Manny and Ellie, having sorted out their differences, await the birth of their baby with Manny trying to make sure that everything will be perfect when the baby mammoth arrives. With all of this attention on the impending birth, Diego wonders if he is becoming too laidback and perhaps even soft, and Sid begins to long for a family of his own.

The real trouble begins when Sid suddenly winds up in a strange world, finds some dinosaur eggs and decides to adopt them as his family. There is no choice, Sids herd must rescue him. Before they know it, Manny, Diego and Ellie are having close encounters with dinosaurs, facing battles with flora and fauna, running amuck and dealing with a one-eyed weasel known as Buck who hunts dinosaurs relentlessly.
