DVD and monograph box set

The Story of the Kelly Gang is arguably the world's first dramatic feature film.

The Story of the Kelly Gang (1906) is the crowning achievement of Australia's earliest film industry, and represents a benchmark in world film history. Most of the film has been lost, but the discovery and survival of what remains is an amazing tale of luck and detective work, and its restoration has involved global collaboration as well as innovative uses of state-of-the-art technology.

To celebrate the centenary of it first screening, on Boxing Day 1906, the National Film and Sound Archive (NFSA) and Australian Teachers of Media (ATOM) are releasing a box set that includes a DVD of the restored fragments and a monograph written by renowned film academics Ina Bertrand and Bill Routt.

The DVD includes:

  • The restored 17 minutes of the original film
  • Commentary by Graham Shirley, Senior Curator Moving image
  • International commentary by Professor Ian Christie
  • A study version that runs approx. 30 mins including stills and intertitles.
  • Conversation about the restoration between Sally Jackson and Graham Shirley
  • Piano accompaniment by Mauro Colombis
  • Experimental music accompaniment by Endorphin
  • Image gallery

The 200-page monograph has been acclaimed in Australia and overseas. Dr Bertrand and Dr Routt have meticulously gleaned information from a range of sources to discuss the many claims made about the film's place in history.
