The life of the last Emperor of China, Puyi, has fascinated filmmakers and historians alike. Set against a backdrop of one of the most tumultuous periods of Chinese history, Puyi was both a participant in and a victim of his times. This documentary reveals Puyi's unorthodox life through the use of rare footage from the period. His story – set against the immense luxury of the Chinese nobility, the decadent 1930s in Tianjin, World War Two, the bleakness of prison and the turmoil of the Cultural Revolution – reflects the turbulent history of China and its people during the early and middle twentieth century.
