Conflicts resulting from the meeting of Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with European settlers more than 200 years ago are still visible today. Many Aboriginal and Islander peoples are exposed to racism, injustice and discrimination in a multitude of forms. Aboriginal and Islander people constitute minorities that are often affected profoundly by poverty, unemployment and social exclusion. Not surprisingly many turn for escape to drugs and alcohol.

Imaginary Border focuses on Aboriginal and Islander experiences, and observes their struggle to feel at home in their native lands. This film by Iranian-born Austrian filmmaker, Alireza Ghanie, was made during his travels around Australia and in the Torres Strait Islands. It is not a film about facts, events and objective analysis. It is rather an expression of compassion and empathy, observational in style, and often lyrical in its imagery and emotion. It is a direct and personal response to aspects of Australian society that may be more apparent to outside observers than to those of us who are blinded by our familiarity with them.
