In an AFI Award–winning performance, Judy Davis plays Lilli, a back-up singer for an Elvis impersonator. When she is fired from the tour in a New South Wales south-coast country town, she sets out on a drunken binge. Holed up in a caravan park, she meets up with young Ally (Claudia Karvan) and a friendship soon develops between the women. Emotions run deep as their journey of discovery is tested by Lilli's new boyfriend Mick (Colin Friels) and Ally's grandmother Bet (AFI Award–winner Jan Adele).
Directed by Gillian Armstrong, this incisive study of alienation goes a long way to test the gravity of family values, delivering it in a most powerful and heart-wrenching manner.
