The recent launch of the Yanardilyi – Cockatoo Creek CD-ROM marks an important event in the short history of multimedia production in Australia. Produced by Tanami Network of Yuendumu – a community of 1000 Warlpiri-speaking Aboriginal people situated 300 km northwest of Alice Springs, Yanardilyi is the first CD-ROM to be developed and owned by members of a remote Aboriginal community. Yet this project has not come out of the blue. Viewed from the perspective of the people at Yuendumu, Yanardilyi is but the latest episode in a history of engagement with new media spanning more than fifteen years.
