Film as Text. Water (Deepa Mehta, 2005) exposes and comments on the appalling treatment of widowed women in parts of India, where even today some of the attitudes depicted in the film still exist. It also uses the treatment of the widows to represent larger issues about how those in positions of power misuse religion to deny human rights.
