Imitation may be the sincerest form of flattery, but the films Son of Rambow (Garth Jennings, 2007) and Be Kind Rewind (Michel Gondry, 2008) and a flurry of Internet videos suggest that it is also a powerful outlet for creativity and the first step in fledgling filmmakers' search for their own voices.
