A new and, until recently, relatively unheralded industry, smartphone games are increasingly emerging as not just an alternative to their more established videogame counterparts, but also a distinctive and exciting artform in their own right. Looking in detail at two recent works – award-winning Australian 'craft game' Florence and mindfulness 'companion' #SelfCare – Jini Maxwell finds examples of mobile interfaces enabling and fostering new approaches to gaming narrative and language.
