An article which focuses on critical literacy work done as part of an integrated unit of work called 'MUSIC' with Grade 3/4/5 students. 'The children made many uses of these popular everyday texts. They purchased them to learn the words of the current hit songs, to get the free posters included for decorating their bedroom walls, to learn about their favourite stars and current heartthrobs, and to better participate with their peer culture. The teaching focus in this unit concerned the choices writers face as they write, and the connection between the choices made and the possible manipulation of meanings for the reader.'
