With the ever-increasing presence of handheld devices in young children's lives, there is a necessity and opportunity for preschool, kindergarten and lower primary students to have access to pedagogically beneficial applications. Drawing upon established research into children's television and her own experiences working with a software award's children's jury, Kathrin Mertes uses the case study of German as a Second Language game Die Bienenretter to investigate the value of engaging content, strong storytelling, contextual learning and parasocial interaction in app-based learning resources.
