In the wake of the furore over Mel Gibson's 'The Passion of the Christ' Avril Alba examines the portrayal of religions and religious belief in film, and the issues that arise when teaching such films in the classroom. Using 'The Passion of the Christ' as a case in point, she asks 'while it may not be right or simply not realistic to demand of artists that they consider the possible societal consequences of the ideas they convey, surely we must demand this of those who utilize artistic mediums as an educational resource?'
