The push for gender equality that continues today has many tumultuous chapters throughout modern history, not least of which is the fight for women's suffrage. This recent film, a fictionalised account of the real-world struggle for the vote in early-twentieth-century Britain, is a powerful reminder to students of the extreme repression that women were facing just a century ago, writes Carolyn Leslie.
