The rich historical drama The Grandmaster consolidates Wong Kar Wai's status as Hong Kong cinema's pre-eminent global export. At the same time, the film and its various renditions recast his oeuvre's concerns in a new light and are illustrative of increasing transnational relationships in cinema, writes Nicholas Godfrey.
