In this article, Philip Brophy maps out a diagram of the state of film sound and music in Australia, and to reference it equally to practitioners, technicians, educators, trainers, professionals and newcomers. But to get some sort of bigger picture on sound and music in Australian movies, one has to first understand how that noble pursuit we call 'film culture' interfaces with that charming monolith we call 'the film industry' in real, everyday terms. It's not a pretty picture, but it may aid in tuning out a lot of the unnecessary noise that clouds the clarity which Australian film sound and music could achieve.
