Recounting the life of an illustrious figure requires a balance between praise and evaluation, closeness and context, telling and showing – especially when seeking to rehabilitate their esteem in the public eye. This documentary certainly paints a rich picture of a famed but largely forgotten pianist, though its scope and structure strike some discordant chords as well, writes Kit MacFarlane.
