In his debut feature, Zhang Hanyi uses the premise of a child possessed by his deceased mother's spirit, along with the plight of his local village, to dramatise how industrial development encroaches on rural life in China. The end result, according to Nicholas Godfrey, is a masterful meditation on life, loss, landscape and change.
