The suburbia of Beautiful is not the neo-realist one of the amiable Aussie battler in The Castle or Kenny. Rather, the unnamed neighbourhood is a surreal, sinister place, whose apparent tranquillity belies a world of temptation, suspicion and malevolence. Emma Flanagan talks to writer/director Dean O'Flaherty about how he made the film, and his transition from film distributor to filmmaker.
