Examining a pair of VR works showcased at the 2019 Melbourne International Film Festival – the first, by graphic artist Sutu, encouraging Indigenous teenagers to construct their own imagined futures; the second, by multidisciplinary collaborators Isobel Knowles and Van Sowerwine, using a taxi ride as synecdoche for migration – Kim Munro finds that they skilfully blend fiction with documentary elements as well as centring their subjects' experiences, signalling new possibilities for the artform along the way.
