Noel King talks to Barbara Klinger about her book Melodrama and Meaning: History, Culture, and the Films of Douglas Sirk (1994) in relation to recent trends in film studies. Klinger, who is Director of the Cultural Studies Program at Indiana University, also makes some provocative comments – which should resonate in the current Australian tertiary education context – on the impact of the developing field of 'cultural studies' on film studies' understanding of itself as a distinct theoretical and curricular domain.
