Almost two centuries have passed since an uncouth apprentice stocking-maker of Leicestershire (so goes the story) broke his weaving frames in a fit of pique and entered history. Inadvertently he gave hs name to a politiacal movement, and coined a word for the English language. If history is to be believed, this apprentice was one Ned Ludlow, a name that contracted to Ned Ludd, and the movement that came to bear his name was the Luddites.
