Alyx Duncan began work on The Red House thinking she was making a documentary. When her father and stepmother announced they were leaving the house she grew up in on an island in Auckland's Hauraki Gulf, she was moved to make a record of it. But, rather than cinema, The Red House an artistic enterprise; it is closer to documentation than fictionalisation.
