'On the surface, Highly Strung is about the world of stringed instruments. But it's really about the people – people who play them, people who make them, people who sell them. It's an extraordinary world.' – Scott Hicks, director

Highly Strung is a documentary film about string instruments, their history, and the people who play them and make them. Focusing on members of the Australian String Quartet and the unique world of Guadagnini instruments, Highly Strung travels from Adelaide to New York, Milan, Venice, Cremona, Paris and London. On this journey we meet many interesting and colourful characters that bring these valuable instruments to life, from the workshop to the concert platform.

Curriculum guidelines

Highly Strung is suitable for secondary students in the learning areas of Music (HIstory and Performance), English, Design and Technology, Visual Arts, and Film and Media Studies. It would also be an excellent resource for tertiary students of music history and performance.
