Product Overview

Inspired by the true story of the women who inspired the world …

Suffragette (2015) is a feature film directed by Sarah Gavron. The film provides a fictional account of a group of East London women who realised that polite, law-abiding protests were not going to get them very far in the battle for voting rights in early twentieth-century Britain.

Suffragette is the powerful story of the foot soldiers of the early feminist movement, women who were forced underground to pursue a dangerous game of cat and mouse with an increasingly brutal State.

Fighting for the right to vote, these women were not only from the genteel, educated classes – there were working women among them who had seen peaceful protest achieve nothing. Radicalised and turning to violence as the only route to change, they were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality – their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives. Maud (Carey Mulligan) is one such woman, struggling in a fight for dignity that is both heartbreaking and inspirational. With a stunning cast including Helena Bonham-Carter, Brendan Gleeson and Meryl Streep, Suffragette is both timeless and timely.
