What do you do when you have a script based on the assumptions pertaining to the Cold War and the 'war' no longer exists? Well, you devise another 'Cold War' scenario concerning a breakaway group from the Russian army that wants to threaten the United States with nuclear weapons. Then, how do you convince the general public, which has seen the dismemberment of the Russian empire, that this is a plausible premise for a big-budget film? By putting a CNN reporter on a battleship talking into the camera about these threatening developments, as in Crimson Tide (Tony Scott, 1995).
