It is ironic – and perhaps witty – to hold an art exhibition that attempts to create new, non-British perspectives of Australian landscapes in London. Orbital was held simultaneously at the Centre for Contemporary Art in Fitzroy, Melbourne, and at the Lux Gallery in London in July 2000. It is an ambitious project that features the work of five artists and touches on an important theme: if we are to identify ourselves and our culture as uniquely Australian, then we need our own visions of our own country. Unfortunately, Orbital wastes a fine opportunity to add a new level of discourse to Australian culture and identity.
