Considering how successful it was at the time and how it has subsequently been so overshadowed by those decorous period pieces of the 1970s revival, it is most apt that The Man from Hong Kong should be brought to the attention of another generation of filmgoers. Constantine Verevis' perceptive essay pays tribute to Brian Trenchard-Smith's control of the action genre – and to his way of spoofing it at the same time. It may not be high art, but it is an unerringly professional piece that may look particularly attractive in comparison to today's overblown spectacles.
