The week after the world premiere of Peter Weir's Picnic at Hanging Rock on 8 August 1975, Bert Deling's Pure Shit had its first public screening at the short-lived but markedly progressive Pert Film Festival. Danks points out that Pure Shit's reliance on the anecdotes and experiences of the mostly ex-drug-addict cast is both a bold experiment and a little too insular in its ultimate perspective.
