Those are the lines that spring to my mind whenever I think of Macbeth. For one thing, 'blood' is perhaps the motif which colours the whole play for me, and, for another, in the weary self-knowledge of that dreadful image speaks a man who is very far from being the 'butcher' Malcolm calls him at the end.
