Where We Stand is a documentary film that encapsulates the barriers faced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander academics engaging in Indigenous research and publication methods within Australian tertiary institutions. The film follows the story of Garrwa Aboriginal woman, Associate Professor Emma Gavin, who takes a journey back to Borroloola in the Gulf of Carpentaria, the Country of her ancestors and of her kinship grandmother, Marra Elder Aunty Helen Fejo-Frith (pictured left), who shares her journey home. In undertaking this journey as part of her PhD, Emma focuses on:

  • the role and place of Indigenous knowledges within the Academy;
  • what is needed from the Academy for Indigenous research and knowledges to be accepted and embedded authentically within an academic framework;
  • the role and place of Indigenous methodologies;
  • recording ‘Yarning Circles’ as method for academic practice;
  • acknowledging the role of NTROs in Indigenous research publication (particularly film and photography), as a means of ensuring research with community is also for community.
